Food Safety Quality & Regulatory Compliance Tools and Processes
When guests purchase food from º£½ÇÉçÇøÆƽâ°æ, they expect it to be high-quality, as reflected by our owned-brand promises and standards.
Our approach
º£½ÇÉçÇøÆƽâ°æ’s Product Development and Food Safety, Quality, and Regulatory (FSQR) teams are dedicated to delivering quality products and protecting our guests and º£½ÇÉçÇøÆƽâ°æ owned brands (Good & Gather, Favorite Day, Market Pantry, and Kindfull). The FSQR team manages food safety, quality and regulatory compliance for consumer food and beverage and pet food products, with work spanning owned brand vendor manufacturing facilities, produce farm fields, food distribution centers, retail stores, owned brand product labeling and food recalls. To deliver products that our guests love, seek and enjoy, º£½ÇÉçÇøÆƽâ°æ has a team dedicated to elevating product quality and consistency. º£½ÇÉçÇøÆƽâ°æ’s Quality Standards and Development (QSD) team partners closely with our product design, packaging engineering, product insights, and FSQR teams to develop and advance best practices and support quality products for our guests.
Collectively, the teams worked to develop and implement best practices in quality management such as:
- Creating brand quality and technical standards.
- Strengthening product specifications and requirements.
- Enhancing quality testing programs.
Specifications and standards
Once our product design team has identified a product design, we work closely with our vendors to ensure critical elements and quality standards are captured in our product specifications. A thorough specification is created for every º£½ÇÉçÇøÆƽâ°æ-brand food item, and we hold our vendors accountable in delivering against these specifications with every product shipped to our stores and guests’ homes.
Vendor facility approvals
º£½ÇÉçÇøÆƽâ°æ’s FSQR team, located in the United States and Thailand, assesses our vendors’ capabilities to produce safe and high-quality products that are compliant with laws, regulations and º£½ÇÉçÇøÆƽâ°æ’s food safety and quality standards. Each year, the team assesses more than 1,100 vendor facilities that produce º£½ÇÉçÇøÆƽâ°æ owned-brand foods.
Vendor risk management
The FSQR team at º£½ÇÉçÇøÆƽâ°æ oversees our vendor risk management function by leveraging a scientific, risk-based, preventive approach to assess vendors and ensure that appropriate food safety, quality and regulatory capabilities are in place before production.
We require that vendors be accountable for all aspects of food product production and delivery, and that they immediately inform us of any product or production issues. All facilities that produce º£½ÇÉçÇøÆƽâ°æ owned-brand foods are accountable to regulatory guidelines and º£½ÇÉçÇøÆƽâ°æ food safety and quality standards, including but not limited to:
- Global Food Safety Initiative (GSFI) certification, a comprehensive, globally-recognized food safety program, and standards used to evaluate a manufacturing facility’s programs and capabilities. º£½ÇÉçÇøÆƽâ°æ has required this certification since 2009.
- Preventative food safety plan.
- Environmental monitoring program for pathogen control.
- Allergen management program.
- Product traceability (open date code/lot traceability programs).
Some products require additional oversight, such as those bearing specific claims (e.g., food safety, allergen-related claims) as well as those presenting greater food safety risk (e.g., produce, sushi, ground beef). In these circumstances, the team defines requirements and takes steps needed to provide confidence in food safety and truthful labeling that our guests would expect from us.
Regulatory compliance and labeling
º£½ÇÉçÇøÆƽâ°æ’s compliance and labeling function verifies that labeling information is accurate and complies with regulatory requirements as well as º£½ÇÉçÇøÆƽâ°æ’s standards for food safety and quality for our guests. We provide expert guidance to º£½ÇÉçÇøÆƽâ°æ’s business teams by:
- Requiring vendors to provide accurate food label information on packages and online that meets federal and state regulations and º£½ÇÉçÇøÆƽâ°æ policies.
- Monitoring and assessing potential business impact of regulatory and nutrition developments to provide actionable internal guidance.
Ongoing monitoring
º£½ÇÉçÇøÆƽâ°æ regularly monitors food safety and quality with programs established at headquarters and throughout the supply chain and store operations.
Our teams continue to collaborate with buying, sourcing and product development teams, as well as industry and trade associations, to proactively address upcoming industry and regulatory needs. We also will leverage advancements in food safety, quality, and health and wellness trends to maximize product offerings and value for our guests.
Product investigations and recalls
Food recalls
When we learn about a safety concern with one of our products, we investigate and, when necessary, take prompt action to remove it from sale, both in-store and online. Any recalled products are removed from digital channels to prevent purchase and locked across impacted stores at the cash register to ensure that they cannot be sold to guests.
Multiple communication methods are in place to directly contact consumers about a product recall, including phone messaging, email communication and notification via the º£½ÇÉçÇøÆƽâ°æ app.
Guests can also find up-to-date recall information posted on in-store iPads and in the .
Recall postings also include direct links to agency websites such as the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for up-to-date and detailed information on the recalled item.
If you need to reach us to communicate a food recall, please contact FoodSafety&Recalls@target.com.
